A Dash by Any Other Name A hyphen (-) forms a compound word, such as "self-assured."

An en dash (–) indicates a span of time, such as "1980–2000."

An em dash (—) indicates a break in thought, such as "He counted the stolen loaves—not that there were that many—and replaced them in the bag."
If Only …
The meaning of a sentence depends on the position of adverbs such as "only" and "almost." Make sure the adverb immediately precedes the word it modifies.

Only she dances when the moon is full. (She's the sole dancer.)
She only dances when the moon is full. (That's all she does: she doesn't walk or talk or breathe.)
She dances only when the moon is full. (She dances at no other time.)

He almost found $3 million in jewels. (He came away empty-handed.)
He found almost $3 million in jewels. (He'll have a nice down payment on a yacht.)
